Heinz Werner Wessler is Professor of Indology with a focus on modern South Asian languages and cultures at the Department of Linguistics and Philology, Uppsala University. He continues Uppsala's longstanding tradition of South Asian studies, which began with Sanskrit teaching in 1838. After completing his post-doctoral "habilitation" at Bonn University, Germany, he joined Uppsala as a visiting professor in 2010 and became a full professor in 2014. He maintains an active international presence through multiple board memberships and academic collaborations across South Asia and Europe.
Professor Wessler's educational background spans multiple disciplines and institutions:
- Studies in Indology, Comparative Religion, and Musicology in Bonn, Delhi, and Zurich, Switzerland
- Doctorate (Dr. phil.) in classical Indology
- Post-doctoral "habilitation" at Bonn University, Germany
Wessler's research focuses on modern South Asian languages, particularly Hindi and Urdu, alongside the cultural history, religion, and society of India and Pakistan. His scholarly journey reflects a transition from classical Sanskrit literature to contemporary South Asian studies. He has made significant contributions to understanding Dalit literature, Sikh religious identity, and the role of Hindi as both a national and global language. His interdisciplinary approach connects linguistic analysis with cultural studies, religious history, and political science to provide nuanced insights into South Asia's complex identity formations and social transformations.
His extensive publication record demonstrates consistent scholarly engagement across multiple languages (English, German, Swedish, Hindi), with recent works showing increasing attention to contemporary geopolitical developments in South Asia. The research trends reveal a consistent pattern of connecting historical context with current political formations, particularly examining how linguistic and literary traditions intersect with national identity politics, religious movements, and social justice issues in modern South Asia.
Professor Wessler has received significant recognition for his contributions to Hindi studies:
- Vishva Hindi Samman (2015)
- George Grierson Award (2018, awarded 2021)
- Camil Bulcke Award (2022, awarded 2023)
Wessler serves in multiple leadership roles within the academic community. He also serves on the board of "Suedasienbuero eV," advisory boards of "Literaturforum Indien" and "Aalami Urdu Adab," and is an honorary foreign faculty member of Oriental College at the University of the Punjab in Lahore, Pakistan. Additionally, he contributes to scholarly discourse as a member of the editorial boards for "Orientalia Suecana," "Garbhanal," "Suedasien," and "Signum." His academic work extends beyond traditional research through numerous interviews, lectures, and media appearances in multiple languages, reflecting his commitment to knowledge dissemination and public intellectual engagement.
