Heinz Beck

Professor Heinz Beck directs the Institute for Experimental Epileptology and Cognition Research at University of Bonn, where he investigates fundamental principles of neuronal circuit function and their disruption in epilepsy. Research integrates dendritic computation studies, in vivo imaging, and network analysis to understand cognitive processing mechanisms.

Key publications demonstrate how degraded dendritic input detection underlies spatial memory deficits in epilepsy (Brain 2022) and establish astrocytic mediation of septohippocampal signaling (Neuron 2016). The laboratory employs multilevel approaches from single-neuron electrophysiology to system-level circuit analysis, developing conceptual frameworks for neural information processing.

Current projects examine recurrent cortical motifs, dendritic integration properties in epileptogenesis, and neuromodulatory circuit regulation. As TRA Life and Health Speaker, he coordinates interdisciplinary neuroscience initiatives across Bonn's research community.
