Tuomas Heikkilä is a Professor in Church History at the Faculty of Theology, University of Helsinki, Finland. His academic career spans roles as Director of the Finnish Scholarly Institute in Rome (2013-2017), University Lecturer in Church History (2010-2013, 2017-2019), and Principal Investigator for projects like The Written Culture in Medieval Finland (2008-2012).

His research focuses on medieval calendars, computer-assisted stemmatology, and manuscript studies, particularly medieval parchment fragments. Additional interests include hagiography, monastic history in the High Middle Ages, and Finnish identity history.
Notable scientific awards include the Historical Work of the Year Prize (2006), Bright Middle Ages Prize (2012), and the Ernst and Ines Nevanlinna Scholarly Residence (2006-2021). He has led major research initiatives such as Nordic Medieval Book History in the European Context and Time in the Eternal City Project (2013-2020).
He serves as Editor-in-Chief for Diplomatarium Fennicum (2018-2020) and has held acting professorships in General History (2004, 2008-2009). He holds docent titles in Finnish History (Turku, 2013), Church History (Helsinki, 2006), and General History (Helsinki, 2003).
