Heike Harting is an Associate Professor of English at the University of Montreal, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Literatures and World Languages. She holds a PhD from the University of Victoria and has been with the department since 2003. Her research focuses on postcolonial theory, planetary cultural studies, and narratives of global violence and health, co-directing the first Canadian Research Centre on Planetary Cultural and Literary Studies (CELCP).
Research Interests: Harting’s work bridges decolonial writing, bioart, and the Anthropocene, examining how these challenge hegemonic discourses. She has published on topics like planetary health, pandemic narratives, and African/Canadian literatures. Her 2024 book Planetary Health Humanities and Pandemics (with Heather Meek) exemplifies her interdisciplinary approach.
Awards & Grants: Harting leads major projects funded by the Québec government (FRQSC) and SSHRC, including “Viral Conjunctures: Pandemics and Planetary Health Narratives” (2023–2027). She has also received awards from the International Council for Canadian Studies and SSHRC.
Teaching & Supervision: She supervises doctoral and MA students in planetary studies, health humanities, and postcolonial literatures. Courses include “Literary Practices and the Planetary Imagination” and “Literatures and Globalization.”
Labs/Teams: Co-founder and co-director of CELCP, she collaborates on transdisciplinary teams exploring care, well-being, and narrative intersections.
