Dr. Heidi MacDonald is the Dean of Arts and Professor of History and Politics at the University of New Brunswick. Her research focuses on twentieth-century Canadian history with specializations in Atlantic Canada, the Great Depression, women religious (nuns), suffrage, and youth. She has authored and co-authored influential books such as We Shall Persist: Women and the Vote in the Atlantic Provinces (2023) and Vatican II and Beyond: The Changing Mission and Identity of Canadian Women Religious (2017). Her current project explores youth experiences during the Great Depression in Canada.
Her editorial roles include serving on the board of Acadiensis: The Journal of Atlantic Canada Studies. She also contributes to community initiatives through her roles on the Saint John City Commemoration Advisory Committee and the New Brunswick Public Libraries Foundation Board of Trustees.
Dr. MacDonald previously held positions at the University of Lethbridge from 1999 to 2018, including founding Director of the Centre for Oral History and Tradition. She actively engages with media and welcomes graduate students in her research areas.
Her peer-reviewed articles analyze topics like women’s suffrage in Prince Edward Island and the evolution of Catholic women’s education. Notable recognition includes a Hilda Neatby Award nomination for her 2017 article on suffrage and Confederation.
