Carmen Nielson is an Associate Professor at Mount Royal University's Faculty of Humanities. She holds a PhD from Queen's University, alongside MA and BA degrees from Queen's and the University of Calgary. Her research focuses on 19th-century Canadian history, gender studies, political satire, and visual culture. A central project explores Grip magazine's role in shaping Anglo-Canadian political identity through graphic satire, comparing it to British Punch magazine.
Teaching includes courses on Indigenous-settler relations, gender in Canada, and historical methodology. Key publications include Reading Canadian Women’s and Gender History (2019) and articles in Canadian Historical Review and Gender and History.
Her work has been recognized with awards including the Hilda Neatby Prize (2015) and SSHRC funding (2019-20). Research emphasizes intersections of gender, colonialism, and visual representation in shaping national identity.
