Heidi Hutner is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at Stony Brook University with joint affiliations in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences and Women's and Gender Studies. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Washington, Seattle (1993). Hutner's research bridges environmental literature, ecofeminism, and environmental justice, with particular focus on nuclear studies and gender-environment intersections.
Her research explores:
- Environmental humanities through literary and film analysis
- Ecofeminist responses to nuclear disasters
- Intersections of gender, race, and environmental justice
- Maternal environmental activism and health impacts
- Climate narratives and ecological grief
Publications demonstrate strong focus on nuclear studies (44%), ecofeminism (31%), and environmental justice (25%), with increasing attention to climate change and pandemic intersections in recent works. Research outputs have evolved from literary criticism toward environmental justice advocacy and documentary storytelling.
