Dr. Heather Tillewein is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health and Human Performance at Austin Peay State University. She holds certifications as a Master Certified Education Specialist (2023) and Certified Health Education Specialist (2019), with a Doctorate in Health Education (Southern Illinois University, 2019), a Master of Public Health (University of Missouri, 2014), and a Bachelor of Health Science (University of Missouri, 2012).
Her research focuses on LGBTQIA+ health, sexuality, reproductive health, and gender minority issues. Notable projects include leading the NIH/NIDA-funded ETHIC grant addressing HIV/STD transmission in rural drug-using communities and investigating conversion therapy impacts on transgender individuals. She serves on policy committees for the American Public Health Association and directs membership for the Boston Congress of Public Health.
Her recent articles explore telehealth accessibility for transgender patients, sexual violence survivors' social media experiences, and rural LGBTQ+ healthcare disparities. Key awards include the 2024 Ayman El-Mohandes Public Health Innovation Award and recognition in the '40 under 40' Public Health Catalyst list.
Grants led by Dr. Tillewein include a $375,000 CDC data validation project and an NIH supplement to engage LGBTQ+ communities in harm reduction. She mentors students on projects like cemetery waste environmental health studies and tick-borne disease surveillance.
