Heather Stewart is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Oklahoma State University. She completed her PhD at the University of Western Ontario in 2021, where she was previously a doctoral student. Her academic work spans multiple areas within philosophy with a particular focus on issues of identity, ethics, and epistemology.
Dr. Stewart's research interests include:
- Philosophy of Gender
- Philosophy of Language
- Epistemology
- Value Theory
- Ethics and Society
- Aristotle's Ethics

- Philosophy of Sexuality
Her scholarship bridges classical philosophical traditions with contemporary social justice concerns, making significant contributions to feminist philosophy, bioethics, and the philosophy of medicine. She has published extensively on how systems of oppression manifest in everyday interactions, particularly in healthcare settings, with a strong emphasis on epistemic injustice and microaggressions. Much of her work is co-authored with Lauren Freeman, focusing on how marginalized patients experience discrimination based on race, gender, sexual orientation, body size, and disability in medical contexts.
Dr. Stewart has also made important contributions to understanding bisexual erasure, transgender healthcare experiences, and the challenges faced by first-generation and low-income philosophers. Her work on Aristotle's ethics demonstrates innovative approaches to making classical philosophy relevant to contemporary issues of diversity and inclusion.
She serves as a PhilPapers Editor for Applied Ethics, indicating her standing in the philosophical community. Her research demonstrates how philosophical analysis can illuminate real-world problems of marginalization and exclusion, connecting micro-level interactions to broader structural issues of oppression.
