Heather Soyka is an Associate Professor in the School of Information at Kent State University, specializing in archival science, research data management, and community engagement. She holds a Ph.D. in Library and Information Science from the University of Pittsburgh iSchool, with a focus on archival appraisal and recordkeeping. Her research explores reproducibility of community engagement, sustainability of research data sharing, and application of continuum theory in archival studies. She has been funded by NSF, IMLS, and the Society of American Archivists. Previously, she held a postdoctoral fellowship with DataONE and collaborated with the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS).
Teaching focuses on archives, research methods, and data management, including courses like LIS 60652 (Foundations of Recordkeeping) and LIS 60040 (Research & Assessment). She co-chairs the Society of American Archivists’ Research Forum and serves on editorial boards for American Archivist and Kent State University Press. Her work bridges ecology, biology, and computer science through interdisciplinary collaborations.
Key achievements include the Lancour, Immroth, Brewster Award (2015) and leadership roles in initiatives like the Archival Education and Research Institute (AERI). Her research emphasizes transparency, inclusivity, and sustainability in data practices, with notable contributions to peer-reviewed journals such as Archival Science and International Journal of Digital Curation.
