Victoria Van Hyning

Victoria Van Hyning is an Assistant Professor of Library Innovation at the University of Maryland's College of Information Studies (iSchool). She joined the iSchool in 2020, specializing in digital humanities, accessibility, and crowdsourcing applied to cultural heritage. Her work centers on marginalized voices, including historical records of religious minorities and contemporary incarcerated communities.

Education & Background: She held a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship in English Literature at Oxford University and served as Humanities PI for Zooniverse.org. Previously, she managed the Library of Congress's By the People crowdsourcing project, transcribing over 113,000 pages of historical documents.

Research & Projects: Co-founder of the Center for Archival Futures (CAFe) and member of the Maryland Initiative for Digital Accessibility (MIDA). Key projects include the CDAAA grant exploring transcription accessibility, the Shakespeare’s World initiative, and the David C. Driskell Papers Project. She also co-authored the American Library Association’s Standards for Library Services for the Incarcerated or Detained.

Awards & Recognition: Recipient of the Museums and the Web Platinum GLAMi Award for the AnnoTate project and a 2022 IMLS Early Career Grant. Her work bridges academic research, public engagement, and institutional reform in libraries and archives.

Labs & Teams: Leads the Recovering and Reusing Archival Data (RRAD) Lab, focusing on long-term preservation and reuse of crowdsourced data. Collaborates across disciplines to advance accessibility, digital preservation, and inclusive cultural heritage practices.
