Heather Mernitz, PhD, is a Professor of Chemistry at Alverno College, where she has taught since 2007. She serves as Chair of the Council for Student Assessment and faculty advisor for pre-pharmacy students in Alverno's accelerated Bachelor of Science/Doctor of Pharmacy programs with the Medical College of Wisconsin and Concordia University Wisconsin Schools of Pharmacy. Her teaching portfolio includes Foundations for Chemistry, Chemistry of Bio-organic Molecules, Biochemistry, Biochemistry of Micronutrients, and Mathematical Connections.
Dr. Mernitz earned her PhD in Nutritional Biochemistry and Metabolism from Tufts University in Boston. She actively participates in the Midwest Association of Chemistry Teachers at Liberal Arts Colleges (MACTLAC) and contributes to K-12 science education as an organizer and judge for regional science fairs.
Her scholarly work pioneers reform in undergraduate chemistry education through active, collaborative, and student-centered learning in real-world contexts. She has developed and evaluated physical and computer-based biomolecular modeling activities to enhance student engagement across the chemistry curriculum. Mernitz has led over 30 national and international workshops on pedagogical innovation and consults extensively on ability-based education and assessment systems.
As a dedicated curriculum developer, she has published and reviewed chemistry classroom materials while advising pre-pharmacy students. Her community engagement extends to K-12 science fair mentorship, demonstrating commitment to science education at all levels.
