Dr. Heather Medbury is a Clinical Senior Lecturer and Senior Research Fellow at the University of Sydney's Westmead Clinical School, Department of Surgery. Her research focuses on cardiovascular diseases, particularly atherosclerosis, with an emphasis on monocyte and macrophage dynamics. She investigates how these cells contribute to plaque stability and inflammation-driven residual cardiovascular risk. Her work aims to identify therapeutic targets to reduce heart attacks and strokes.
As Director of the Australian Atherosclerosis Society (2011–2016), Medbury has led initiatives to advance understanding of vascular diseases. She collaborates on projects like the NSW Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Biobank (2022), focusing on lipid profiles and monocyte behavior in high-risk populations. Her research integrates clinical observations with molecular mechanisms, addressing both basic science and translational applications.
- Key Themes: Cardiovascular Disease, Inflammation, Immunology
- Research Priorities: Monocyte heterogeneity, atherosclerosis prevention, preeclampsia immunology
Her publications span 20+ years, with recent work highlighting monocyte subset roles in burn scarring, maternal-fetal inflammation, and lipid-ApoA1 interactions. Medbury’s group uses advanced flow cytometry and mouse models to probe therapeutic avenues targeting CX3CR1 and heparan sulfate pathways.
