Edward A. Fisher is a Professor at New York University Grossman School of Medicine, affiliated with the Department of Medicine, Cell Biology, Microbiology, and Pediatrics. He serves as the Leon H. Charney Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine and directs the Bell Prog Vas Bio & Dis Prev & Res Ctr. His research focuses on molecular and immunologic mechanisms of atherosclerosis and lipoprotein metabolism.
- MD from New York University, 1975
- PhD from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1982
- MPH from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 1978
- Residency and Fellowships in Pediatrics, Medical Genetics
Dr. Fisher’s research explores two major areas: (1) the cell biology of lipoprotein assembly and secretion in the liver, linking these processes to cardiovascular disease risk factors like fatty liver, and (2) molecular approaches to reverse atherosclerosis by targeting lipoprotein levels and plaque inflammation. His work extends to human studies and clinically relevant conditions such as obesity and diabetes.
Recent publications analyze metabolic drivers of atherosclerosis, caloric restriction effects on plaque resolution, and ANGPTL3 gene deficiency in lipoprotein kinetics. These studies highlight trends in obesity-related cardiovascular risk, inflammation resolution, and molecular targets for lipid metabolism disorders.
- Scientific Awards
- Award from the National Lipid Association for clinical lipidology contributions
Dr. Fisher is also director of the Center for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease and leads a federally-funded program studying arterial damage reversal. His work bridges basic science, translational research, and clinical practice to advance cardiovascular prevention strategies.
