Dr. Heather Barry is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at Queen’s University Belfast, within the School of Pharmacy Material and Advanced Technologies for Healthcare. She holds a First Class Honours degree in Pharmacy (2006) and a PhD in Pharmacy Practice (2012) from Queen’s University. Her research focuses on primary care, particularly optimizing medicines management for older adults with conditions like dementia, frailty, and polypharmacy. She has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications and contributed to international journals like the International Journal of Pharmacy Practice, where she serves as Associate Editor.
Barry’s academic roles include teaching pharmacy and medicine undergraduate courses and delivering workshops for pharmacists. She has held visiting scholar positions at Canadian institutions (McMaster University, University of Waterloo) and collaborates on interdisciplinary projects, including the MED-AGE program addressing medicines in aging societies and the DelHPIre initiative improving delirium management education. Awards include the Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (2019) and the Global Research Partnership Development Award (2022).
Her research spans qualitative and quantitative methodologies, emphasizing interdisciplinary solutions to healthcare challenges. Current projects address anticholinergic burden in dementia, pharmacist roles in general practice, and digital education tools for healthcare professionals. Barry’s work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being.
