Heath Carter is a Professor in the Department of History at Valparaiso University's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. His work focuses on the intersection of religion and labor movements in American history, particularly during the Gilded Age.
In his book Union Made: Working People and the Rise of Social Christianity in Chicago, Carter challenges traditional narratives of the Social Gospel movement by centering working-class contributions. His research examines how blacksmiths, glove makers, teamsters, and printers shaped theological debates about capitalism and industrialization in late-19th-century Chicago.
The book highlights the role of Social Christianity in addressing economic inequality, linking historical labor struggles to contemporary social justice issues. While Carter's recent publications appear limited to this monograph, his scholarship has been cited in academic discussions about religious responses to industrial capitalism.
