David Carter

David Carter is an Associate Professor of History at Auburn University, affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts. He holds a PhD from Duke University (2001) and a BA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1992). His research focuses on the Black Freedom Struggle, post-1945 U.S. history, and racialized violence, with notable work on Lyndon Johnson’s civil rights policies and the Vietnam War’s impact on social movements. He has authored multiple books and articles, including The Music Has Gone Out of the Movement (2009), and contributed to PBS documentaries like The Riot Report. His scholarly awards include the Robert Diggs Wimberly Connor Award for his 1999 article on the Williamston Freedom Movement.

Dr. Carter teaches courses on American history, the Civil Rights Movement, and world history. He has advised the Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society and is a member of organizations such as the Southern Historical Association. His research collaborations include work with Auburn’s College of Education on civil rights history grants and co-editing Mississippi Burning and the Passage of the Civil Rights Act (2011) with Kent Germany. He has also engaged in public outreach through Phi Beta Kappa and community education initiatives.
