Professor Hazel Easthope serves as the Deputy Director of the City Futures Research Centre at the University of New South Wales, within the Faculty of Arts, Design & Architecture. She holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Tasmania and a BA (Hons 1) from the University of Sydney, along with a Certificate in Executive Management and Development from UNSW.
Her research focuses on urban studies and housing, with particular expertise in:
- Urban/Social Planning and Policy
- Medium and High Density Construction Standards
- Development Standards and Controls
- Strata Title Developments
- Sense of Home
- Residential satisfaction and the intersections between mobility, identity and home
- Development, management, governance of private apartment buildings
Professor Easthope has secured numerous significant research grants including 'Constructing Building Integrity: Raising standards through professionalism' (ARC Linkage, 2021-2024), 'Co-design Guide for Transforming Ageing Apartment Buildings' (ARC Linkage, 2021-2024), and 'Reassembling the City: Understanding resident-led collective property sales' (ARC Discovery, 2020-2023), demonstrating her research's practical policy applications.
Her awards include:
- ARC Future Fellowship (2013-2017)
- Planning Institute of Australia Cutting Edge Research and Teaching Award (2014 & 2016)
- UNSW Rising Star Award (2016)
- Strata Community Association Presidents' Award (2012)
Professor Easthope actively supervises PhD students on diverse topics related to multi-owned property, sense of home, and placemaking. She serves as Australasian Editor of Housing Studies journal, UNSW-AHURI Centre Director, and provides expert advice to numerous international organizations including the Technical Support Group to the Commonhold Council in the UK and the Research Committee of the Foundation for Community Association Research in the USA.
