Hazel Cowls is a Lecturer in Adult Nursing (Education) at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, University of Plymouth. She joined the university in 2017 after working in the NHS in acute cardiology, cardiac specialist nurse roles, and as a practice educator. She holds a registered nurse teacher qualification and is an independent/supplementary prescriber. As Deputy Programme Lead (Truro campus), she ensures program quality across campuses.
Hazel’s research focuses on teaching compassion in healthcare education. She serves as Membership Secretary of the Collaboration for Compassion in Healthcare Education (C4CHEd), fostering connections between researchers globally. She teaches undergraduate, foundation degree nursing associate, and postgraduate programs, specializing in Clinical Skills, Leadership/Management (Levels 6/7), Pharmacology/Medicine Optimization (Levels 5/7), and Independent/Supplementary Prescribing (Levels 6/7).
Her recent articles explore virtual collaboration in healthcare education, emphasizing international student partnerships and interprofessional learning. She advocates for compassionate healthcare practices through pedagogical innovation.
