Her expertise lies in Security Studies, Critical International Relations Theory, and Middle East Regional Security. She holds a Ph.D. in International Politics from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth (2000).
Her research challenges Eurocentric frameworks and explores geopolitical discourses, postcolonial critiques, and the intersection of security with secularism and identity. Key contributions include The International in Security, Security in the International (2016) and Regional Security in the Middle East (2019). Recent work interrogates global IR paradigms and the politicization of security in Turkey.
Bilgin’s publications span critical security theory, regionalism, and the decolonization of knowledge. She advocates for non-Western perspectives in IR, emphasizing contrapuntal readings to bridge global-northern and southern epistemologies. Her work on Turkey’s geopolitical dogma and Mediterranean security highlights colonial legacies in regional frameworks.
Her advising and grants focus on mentoring scholars in critical IR and postcolonial studies. She actively participates in Bilkent’s professional development initiatives and international conferences on security and global politics.
