Harvey Henson, Jr. is an Associate Professor affiliated with the Department of Curriculum and Instruction and the Department of Geology at Southern Illinois University. He also serves as the first Director of the STEM Education Research Center at SIUC, fostering collaborations to prepare future STEM educators and professionals.
- Education: B.S. in Geology, Ball State University (1985); M.S. in Geology, SIU Carbondale (1989); Ph.D. in Science Education, SIU Carbondale (2015).
Henson’s research spans science education, earthquake seismology, and applied geophysics, with fieldwork in geology, neotectonics, and environmental/engineering investigations across global sites. His work bridges geological research and educational outreach, emphasizing hazards mitigation and public engagement.
He has secured over $12 million in external grants for STEM initiatives and hazards projects, including the Earthquake Kiosk at the Science Center and the "Suddenly on an Average Day" DVD. Henson mentors undergraduate researchers, advises graduate students, and collaborates with STEM educators regionally and nationally.
As Assistant Dean of the College of Science from 2008–2016, he founded the Saluki Science Ambassadors, a student volunteer group. His outreach activities include earthquake preparedness workshops and partnerships with state/federal agencies and community organizations.
