Harry Brighouse is the Mildred Fish Harnack Professor of Philosophy and Carol Dickson Bascom Professor of the Humanities at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He holds affiliate status in the Department of Educational Policy Studies. His academic roles include directing the Center for Ethics and Education and contributing to the blog Crooked Timber. Brighouse specializes in applied ethics, political philosophy, and the philosophy of education, with a focus on education policy and family ethics. He has authored influential books such as Family Values: The Ethics of Parent-Child Relationships (2014) and Educational Goods: Values and Evidence in Decision-Making (2018), the latter co-edited with Michael McPherson and awarded the 2017 Federic W. Ness Award. His research explores topics like educational equity, civic education, and the moral responsibilities of universities.
Brighouse earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Southern California (1991). He teaches courses on political philosophy, ethics, and the First Year Interest Group program’s Children and the Family. His work bridges theory and practice, advocating for evidence-informed educational decision-making while emphasizing ethical considerations. Notable contributions include critiques of tuition-free public college policies, analyses of instructional quality, and reflections on becoming a better college teacher.
His publications span over three decades, addressing themes such as the aims of higher education, civic engagement, and the intersection of philosophy with educational practice. Beyond academia, Brighouse holds a quirky distinction: an uncredited role in Ken Loach’s film Bread and Roses.
