Harriet Zilliacus is a University Lecturer at the Department of Educational Sciences, Faculty of Educational Sciences, University of Helsinki since August 1, 2017. She holds the title of Docent at the Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS) and is affiliated with the Helsinki Inequality Initiative (INEQ). Her academic work centers on Diversity, Multilingualism and Social Justice in Education, where she serves as a supervisor in the Doctoral Program in School, Education, Society and Culture.
Her research interests include Sustainability education, Worldview education, Multilingual education, Intercultural education, Social justice in education, Diversity studies, Minority studies, and Arts-based qualitative research methods. Zilliacus' work particularly focuses on questions of worldviews and transformative change through policy development, school education, and adult learning. Her doctoral dissertation from 2015 explored student identities and inclusion in minority religious and secular ethics education in Finnish comprehensive schools.
Her recent publications (2023-2025) demonstrate a strong focus on sustainability education, human-nature relationships in educational contexts, multilingualism in Finnish educational settings, and arts-based research methodologies. These works span diverse publication types including book chapters, journal articles, and conference presentations, reflecting her interdisciplinary approach to educational research.

Zilliacus has extensive experience as a thesis supervisor and examiner for Master's theses. She leads and participates in significant research projects including ALTED: Adult Learning and Transformative Sustainability Education (2024-present) and Nature in Worldview Education (2021-present). Her work has received research grants through projects like DIDIA: Multilingual didactics and dialogues (2018-2022) and the Quality of Nordic Teaching, Nordic Center of Excellence (2018-2023).
She teaches primarily within Swedish-language degree programs for general and adult education, as well as teacher and early childhood education programs. Since 2023-2024, she has been responsible for a Sustainability education course for all Swedish-speaking Bachelor students at the Faculty. She has developed several courses including 'Educational policy development towards a sustainable future' and 'Educational Sociology in a global perspective'.
