Harriet Evans

Professor Harriet Evans is a Visiting Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Her research focuses on gender, sexuality, and visual culture in China, particularly during the Mao era. She has conducted extensive work on feminist movements, political posters, and oral histories. Currently, she is completing Beijing from Below, an oral history project documenting everyday life in a central Beijing neighborhood since the 1950s, and has recently concluded a 3-year Leverhulme Trust-funded project on 'Conflicts in Culture: Localities and Heritage in Southwest China.'

Her key expertise includes gendered contestations of heritage, cultural transmission, and memory. She serves as a Trustee of The Rights Practice, a London-based organization, and collaborates with legal professionals assisting women seeking asylum in the UK.

Professor Evans' research integrates interdisciplinary approaches, combining anthropology with historical analysis and visual studies. Her work highlights the intersection of politics, culture, and everyday life in China. She has published extensively on topics such as Mao-era visual culture, feminist activism, and urban sociology.
