Harm van Essen serves as Assistant Professor in the Industrial Design department at Eindhoven University of Technology. He holds multiple leadership roles including Chairman of the Industrial Design Program Committee, representative in the Joint Program Committee, director of the LightLab, and squad leader of Social Interactions with Shared systems.
His research focuses on experience design, interaction design, and design methodology with particular emphasis on integrating technology and social psychology insights into systems design. Current research priorities include Interactive Lighting and Shared Systems, especially exploring how interaction design can improve user experiences of smart connected systems shared by multiple users, such as connected lighting systems.
Van Essen's recent publications (2023-2025) consistently explore collaborative interfaces for TV control, workspace awareness in hybrid work environments, and social connectedness through ambient displays. His work demonstrates how lighting design and tangible interfaces can enhance social interaction and collaborative decision-making in shared environments.
As an educator, he teaches courses including User Experience Theory and Practice, Design for Behavioral Change, and Light and Experience. His background in mechanical engineering and control systems informs his interdisciplinary approach that bridges engineering disciplines with social sciences.
