Harleen Singh is an Associate Professor of Literature and Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies at Brandeis University. She co-founded the South Asian Studies Program (2007-2016 Chair) and serves as faculty representative to the Board of Trustees. Her work bridges postcolonial theory, South Asian literature/film, and feminist studies.
Education: PhD and MA from University of California, San Diego; BA from Sweet Briar College.
Research focuses on gender, history, and identity in South Asian contexts, including Indian film, Partition narratives, and women warriors. Current projects include a critical translation of Amrita Pritam's Pinjar and a monograph on gender and modernity in India.
Awards include the ACLS Burkhardt Fellowship (2017-18), Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship (2003-05), and multiple Theodore & Jane Norman Awards (2006, 2008, 2011). Grants include National Humanities Center residency (2017-18) and Brandeis' Senior Faculty Research Leave (2016).
Serves as Director of the Women's Studies Research Center and affiliated faculty in Comparative Literature, International Studies, and German/Russian/Asian Languages departments.
