Dr. Harlan Zackery serves as the Chair of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts and Director of Choral Activities at Norfolk State University. He is an Associate Professor specializing in choral conducting and music education. His professional roles include conducting the NSU Concert Choir and advising on music programs through his position on the Virginia Symphony Orchestra's Music Advisory Council.
Education: He holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education and a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, along with a Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting from the University of Southern Mississippi.
Research Interests: Zackery focuses on William Grant Still’s compositions, particularly his lynching dramas, and explores intersections of musical theatre with cultural narratives. He emphasizes performance history and the socio-political dimensions of music through his work on topics like ...And They Lynched Him on a Tree.
