Dr. Harish Viswanathan is a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the Department of Engineering and Mathematics, affiliated with the Thermofluids Group. He holds an MSc in Industrial Mathematical Modelling and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Loughborough University. His postdoctoral research at the University of Colorado involved collaborative work with institutions like Iowa State University and the National Energy Technology Lab. Prior to academia, he worked as an Applications Engineer at COMSOL Multiphysics and as a Technical Leader in Fuel Systems CFD at Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India.
- Education:
- MSc Industrial Mathematical Modelling, Loughborough University
- PhD Mechanical Engineering, Loughborough University
His research focuses on aerodynamics, fluid dynamics, and thermofluids, with special interests in fuel tank filling, automotive aerodynamics, aero-vibro acoustics, and two-phase flows. He has authored numerous papers in top-tier journals like Journal of Fluid Mechanics and Physics of Fluids, and holds 8 patents with Daimler.
Recent publications highlight advancements in corrugated wing aerodynamics, squareback vehicle noise reduction, and microfluidic droplet generation. His work bridges computational modeling (e.g., CAA, CFD) with practical automotive engineering challenges.
He supervises doctoral students, including K.K. Chode, whose thesis on aerodynamic noise modeling was completed in 2024. His contributions to fuel system design and fluid-structure interaction have direct industrial applications.
Dr. Viswanathan is actively involved in the Thermofluids Group, contributing to interdisciplinary research in automotive and aerospace engineering.
