Harindra J. Fernando is the Wayne and Diana Murdy Endowed Professor of Engineering and Geosciences at the University of Notre Dame. He holds dual expertise in Engineering and Geosciences, with a career spanning over three decades. His research focuses on fluid mechanics, turbulence, oceanic/atmospheric flows, and sustainable energy solutions. He has authored over 360 journal articles across disciplines like environmental fluid dynamics, experimental methods, and urban pollution.
Education:
- Bachelor of Science, University of Sri Lanka
- Master of Arts and Ph.D., Johns Hopkins University
- Postdoctoral Fellow, California Institute of Technology
Research Interests: His work addresses fundamental and applied fluid dynamics challenges, including boundary layer transport, multiphase flows, and energy storage systems. He leads international field experiments (e.g., MATERHORN, PERDIGAO, CASPER) and integrates remote sensing techniques with fluid mechanics to study environmental processes.
Awards & Roles: Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Environmental Fluid Dynamics, and editor/associate editor of multiple journals. Recipient of honorary doctorates from University of Grenoble and University of Dundee. Elected Fellow of prestigious societies including ASME, APS, AMS, AAAS, AGU, and IAHR.
Grants & Labs: Directed the Environmental Fluid Dynamics Center at Arizona State University (1994–2010). Leads research on urban air pollution mitigation and sustainable energy storage. Collaborates globally on large-scale field experiments to advance environmental fluid dynamics.
