Harel Shapira is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Texas at Austin. He specializes in ethnographic research, focusing on political life in contemporary America, particularly right-wing politics and the cultural implications of gun ownership. His work examines how self-defense is intertwined with group identity and explores the educational practices of gun schools in shaping American democracy.
- Education: Ph.D. in Sociology from Columbia University
Shapira has received grants from the National Science Foundation and the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation. He has taught courses such as Qualitative Methods in Social Research, Introduction to the Study of Society, and Field and Observational Methods. His notable publications include the book Waiting for José: The Minutemen’s Pursuit of America (Princeton University Press) and the edited volume Gun Studies: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Politics, Policy, and Practice (Routledge).
