Haoyue Li is a fifth-year Ph.D. candidate and Sessional Lecturer in the Department of Asian Studies at the University of British Columbia's Faculty of Arts, where she earned her bachelor's and master's degrees. She will teach the undergraduate course History of Chinese Cinema in 2026.
Her educational background includes:
- Bachelor's degree in Asian Studies from the University of British Columbia
- Master's degree in Asian Studies from the University of British Columbia
Her research focuses on late imperial Chinese literature, material culture, and book history, with additional expertise in modern Chinese cinema and popular culture. Her dissertation "Incense and Literary Men: The Connoisseurship, Writing, and Compilation of Objects in Late Ming China" systematically analyzes object-centered literature through incense-related writings across poetry, prose, memoirs, pulu manuals, and connoisseurship texts, bridging textual studies with material culture and knowledge history.
Her research excellence has been recognized with:
- Outstanding Paper Award (2024) from Peking University’s Department of Chinese Language and Literature
- Mori Prize in Asian Studies (2022) from Asian Studies on the Pacific Coast
- Graduate Student Paper Prize (2021) from the American Oriental Society Western Branch
She collaborates with supervisors Dr. C.D. Alison Bailey, Bruce Rusk, and Shoufu Yin, and is available for academic correspondence via email in English or Chinese.
