Dr. Kim's research interests span the reliability of solar cells and electronic devices, multi-scale simulations of bio/nano/energy materials, and material characterization using Atomic Force Microscopy and SEM. His work integrates computational modeling with experimental validation to address critical challenges in renewable energy systems. He specializes in thermo-mechanical analysis of solar cells using finite element method and molecular dynamics to predict lifetime under various environmental conditions including temperature, humidity, and mechanical loading.
His publication record demonstrates consistent focus on solar cell reliability, particularly CIGS (Copper Indium Gallium Selenide) technology. His research examines how mechanical damage, temperature variations, interface cracks, and diffusion barriers affect electrical performance and longevity of photovoltaic systems. This work bridges materials science, mechanical engineering, and renewable energy applications.
As an academic advisor, Dr. Kim has supervised numerous senior design projects related to solar energy systems and electronic devices. He serves as Academic Advisor for the American Society of Mechanical Engineering Student Chapter, supervising solar-powered EV development since 2015 and inviting industry guest speakers for student career preparation.
Dr. Kim teaches courses including Alternative Energy Systems, Modeling of Micro/Nano Systems, Finite Element Method, Dynamics of Physical Systems, Machine Design, and Elementary Engineering Design. His teaching integrates theoretical concepts with hands-on laboratory experiences using tools like ANSYS and COMSOL for computational analysis.
