Brian S. Y. Kim is an Assistant Professor of Materials Science and Engineering and a Professor of Physics at the University of Arizona. His research focuses on designing low-dimensional quantum materials and heterostructures for next-generation electronic, photonic, and quantum technologies. He employs advanced fabrication methods like robotic nano-manufacturing and reconfigurable device architectures, alongside nano-optical imaging, to study emergent phenomena in quantum systems.
Kim holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University (2018). His interdisciplinary work bridges materials science, physics, and engineering, with a particular emphasis on device fabrication and characterization. Key research themes include plasmonics, thermal transport in nanomaterials, and the development of novel 2D material-based devices.
His group explores cutting-edge topics such as hyperbolic polaritons in van der Waals magnets, ambipolar graphene plasmonic cavities, and contact-independent temperature sensing inspired by biological systems. These studies aim to uncover new functionalities in quantum materials and advance technologies like quantum computing and energy-efficient electronics.
Notable contributions include work on phonon conduction suppression via Lévy flight dynamics and the realization of high-performance vertical FETs using 2D metallic electrodes. Kim’s research is characterized by a strong experimental focus with applications in both fundamental science and technological innovation.
