Hans van Eck is the head of the Facilities & Instrumentation department at Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research (DIFFER), leading major research facilities since July 2023. He earned his PhD in 2013 from Eindhoven University of Technology with a thesis on the design of Magnum-PSI's superconducting magnet and vacuum system, following earlier technical roles at the University of Twente and the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (USA).
- Education: Applied Physics, Fontys University of Applied Sciences (1997)
His research interests center on superconductors, strong magnetic fields, and energy materials, aligning with DIFFER’s focus on systems for future energy provision. His work bridges technical instrumentation with experimental physics, particularly in nuclear fusion and vacuum systems.
The Facilities & Instrumentation department under his leadership unifies DIFFER’s research infrastructure, emphasizing cross-specialist knowledge sharing and workload distribution. Van Eck advocates for collaborative management of facilities like Magnum-PSI, Upgraded Pilot-PSI, nano-PSI, and the Ion Beam Facility, ensuring alignment with DIFFER’s strategy for open-access research and commercial partnerships.
He is actively involved in DIFFER’s outreach, guiding guest researchers through a three-tiered access system and promoting engagement via conferences and academic partnerships.
