Hans W. Gruenig serves as an Instructor in the Department of Philosophy. He holds a Ph.D. from Tulane University (2009), an M.A. from California Institute of Integral Studies, and a B.A. from University of Vermont and Albert-Ludwigs Universität Freiburg. His academic interests focus on Continental Philosophy (particularly Heidegger), Eastern Philosophy (especially Buddhism), Comparative Philosophy, Applied Philosophy, and Environmental Ethics.
His research explores themes such as Heidegger's philosophy of personal transformation, analytic and phenomenological approaches to Buddhist concepts like emptiness, and intersections between environmental ethics and Buddhist thought. Recent presentations include analyses of Theravada Buddhist ethics, Heideggerian ambiguity, and meditative cosmogenesis.
Dr. Gruenig has received prestigious awards including the Mortar Board Award for Outstanding Teaching and Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Award. His work bridges philosophical traditions through comparative studies, addressing topics from just war theory in Buddhism to postmodern environmental ethics.
