Hans Vedder serves as Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Groningen, where he leads research in Transboundary Legal Studies and Law on Energy and Sustainability. His scholarly work directly advances UN Sustainable Development Goals for sustainable cities, responsible consumption, and climate action through rigorous legal analysis of transnational governance frameworks.
Specializing in EU Competition Law and Environmental Legislation, Vedder's research examines antitrust enforcement in digital markets, sports governance (notably the International Skating Union case), and treaty-based environmental regulation. His fingerprinted expertise shows dominant concentrations in Competition Law (63%), Environmental Legislation (63%), and EU Legal Instruments (75%), reflecting deep engagement with market regulation and sustainability transitions.
Recent publications reveal intensified focus on modernizing EU competition frameworks amid green transition challenges, with significant contributions to TFEU commentaries and analyses of state aid violations in Dutch agriculture and automotive sectors. His work consistently addresses tensions between corporate power, consumer welfare, and ecological sustainability.
Vedder actively mentors 14 graduate students including Alexander Cordes, organizes the European Environmental Law Forum Conference, and provides frequent expert commentary for Dutch media on competition law violations—such as Limburg's unauthorized state aid to automakers and Google antitrust proceedings—demonstrating exceptional public engagement with legal scholarship.
As core faculty in Transboundary Legal Studies, he collaborates through the European Environmental Law Forum on interdisciplinary projects addressing cross-border legal harmonization for climate resilience, particularly examining how competition law instruments can enforce sustainability standards in global value chains.
