Hans-Peter Kiem is a world-renowned Professor at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center specializing in stem cell gene therapy. His research focuses on developing better stem cell transplantation and cell and gene therapy treatments for patients with genetic, infectious, and malignant diseases.
His research interests include:
- Hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) gene therapy
- Fetal hemoglobin reactivation as treatment for hemoglobinopathies
- Gene editing approaches including CRISPR/Cas9
- Transplant-based functional cure for HIV
- Helper-dependent adenoviral vectors for gene modification
Prof. Kiem's lab particularly targets diseases with high mortality in low and middle-income countries, with emphasis on sickle cell disease, transfusion-dependent thalassemia, and HIV. His work aims to make gene therapy more accessible globally.
He actively presents his research findings at major institutions including the Berlin Institute of Health where he delivered a lecture on 'Novel Approaches To Targeting Hematopoietic Stem Cells for Ex Vivo and in Vivo Gene Therapy' in September 2022.
