Hans-Peter Kiem

Hans-Peter Kiem is a Professor at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in the Translational Science and Therapeutics Division and Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division. He serves as Deputy Director of the Translational Science and Therapeutics Division and holds the Stephanus Family Endowed Chair for Cell and Gene Therapy. Additionally, he maintains academic appointments as Professor in the Division of Hematology and Oncology and Adjunct Professor of Pathology at the University of Washington School of Medicine.

His educational background includes:

• MD and PhD from University of Ulm, Germany (1987-1988)
• Physician/Scientist track at Stanford University/Vanderbilt University (1988-1992)

Dr. Kiem is a world-renowned pioneer in stem-cell and gene therapy research. His laboratory focuses on:

• Stem cell and transplantation biology
• Development of novel gene editing technologies including CRISPR/Cas
• In vivo and ex vivo gene therapy approaches
• Applications for HIV, genetic blood disorders, and cancer

Recent research highlights include developing gene-edited hematopoietic stem cells for HIV resistance, in vivo base editing approaches for sickle cell disease, and scalable gene therapy delivery systems for resource-limited settings. His work aims to translate laboratory discoveries into clinical applications for conditions including Fanconi anemia, severe combined immunodeficiency, hemoglobinopathies, and glioblastoma.

Dr. Kiem leads the Kiem Lab and operates a Vector Core providing viral vector production services to researchers. He also serves as Associate Head of the Hematological Malignancies Program at the Fred Hutch/University of Washington/Seattle Children's Cancer Consortium and is a member of multiple integrated research centers including the Immunotherapy IRC and Pathogen-Associated Malignancies IRC.
