Hans H. Tung is a Professor in the Department of Political Science at National Taiwan University, where he also serves as Associate Dean for Research & Development of the College of Social Sciences, ELITE Chair Professor at the School of Political Science and Economics, and University Excelsior Chair Professor of Political Science. He holds joint appointments at National Tsing Hua University as a professor at the Taipei School of Economics and Political Science, and is a non-resident research fellow at the V-Dem Regional Center for East Asia hosted by Keio University.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Government/Political Science from Harvard University
Research Interests: Tung's research focuses on formal and empirical analyses of political-economic dynamics under authoritarian rule, examining both macro and micro levels. His work spans three main areas: (1) uncovering the political logic of institutional development under authoritarian regimes, (2) exploring individual political-economic decision-making through experimental methods and data, and (3) analyzing how China's rise affects regional dynamics in East Asia.
Scientific Awards:
- 2022 Kaid-Sanders Best Political Communication Article of the Year Award (awarded in 2023 by the International Communication Association) for the article "Power Sharing and Media Freedom in Dictatorships"
- Ranked 7th most impactful political scientist in Asia in 2025 global ranking, placing in top 3% globally for recent research
