Hans-Christian Maner is a Professor of Eastern European History at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, specializing in the history of East Central and Southeast Europe. He holds a habilitation from the University of Leipzig and has held visiting professorships at universities in Romania and Germany. His research focuses on nation and state formation, historical culture, the Habsburg Monarchy, church history, and border regions.
Maner earned his academic credentials through studies in Tübingen, Mainz, and Bucharest (1983–1991), followed by a PhD and habilitation. He has led the Mainz branch of the Southeast Europe Society since 2009 and contributed to numerous editorial roles, including co-editing the Jahrbücher für Geschichte und Kultur Südosteuropas.
His awards include the Romanian Government’s Excellence Prize (2018) and honorary membership in the Romanian Academy’s History Institute. Key research areas include interwar Romania, confessional pluralism, and the legacy of Byzantine and Ottoman empires. He teaches courses on Eastern European history and is actively involved in academic organizations like the Balkanology Association and the German-Romanian Academy.
Maner’s publications span monographs, edited volumes, and over 100 articles, with recent works addressing ethnic minorities in Romania, Byzantine heritage, and border region dynamics. His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary cultural and political issues in Southeast Europe.
