Hannu Marttila is an Associate Professor at the University of Oulu, affiliated with the Faculty of Technology and the Department of Water, Energy and Environmental Engineering. He leads the Hydrology and Water Quality research group within the Water, Energy and Environmental Research Unit.
Marttila’s research focuses on hydrological processes and catchment management in northern landscapes, with interdisciplinary work spanning environmental engineering, stable water isotopes, peatlands, and land use impacts on water quality. His work addresses ecological connections, water protection, and global change in Arctic/Northern regions. Key methodologies include modelling and environmental data analysis.
He has participated in and managed projects funded by the Academy of Finland, the European Union, and various foundations. Marttila also serves as a hydrology subject editor for the Boreal Environmental Research journal.
