Hannes Leitgeb is a Professor and Alexander von Humboldt Professor at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU Munich), leading the Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy. He holds the Chair of Logic and Philosophy of Language within the Faculty of Philosophy, Philosophy of Science, and Religious Studies. Leitgeb earned a Master’s (1997) and PhD (1998) in Mathematics, and a PhD in Philosophy (2001), all from the University of Salzburg. He has held academic positions at Stanford University, the University of Bristol, and LMU Munich, where he became a Humboldt Professor in 2010.
His research focuses on logic (truth, modality, paradoxes), epistemology (belief dynamics, Bayesianism), philosophy of mathematics (structuralism), cognitive science (symbolic representation), and formal philosophy. He advocates applying mathematical methods to philosophical problems, bridging logic, probability, and cognitive science.
Leitgeb’s work includes editing journals like Erkenntnis and Review of Symbolic Logic, organizing major conferences, and securing grants such as the DFG Project on Syntactic Approaches to Interacting Modalities. His awards include the Leibniz Prize (2024), Germany’s highest honor in science, recognizing his groundbreaking work in mathematical-analytical philosophy.
He has advised numerous doctoral students and contributed to foundational debates in logic, including the Lottery Paradox and stability theory of belief. His teaching excellence has been recognized by LMU’s Philosophy Students’ Awards (2012, 2015).
