Hannah Whitby

Dr. Hannah Whitby is a Lecturer in Oceanography at the University of Liverpool, affiliated with the Department of Earth, Ocean and Ecological Sciences within the Faculty of Science and Engineering. She earned her PhD in Marine Biogeochemistry from the same institution and has built a strong research profile in trace metal biogeochemistry and environmental ocean chemistry. She currently mentors four PhD students and teaches key undergraduate modules in Marine Pollution and Environmental Chemistry.

Her research focuses on marine biogeochemical processes, particularly trace metal dynamics in ocean systems, with applications to environmental chemistry and pollution. Drawing from interdisciplinary foundations in chemistry, biology, and physics, her work bridges laboratory experimentation with field-based data collection. She has conducted research cruises and utilized advanced analytical techniques, including algal culturing and nutrient analysis.

Dr. Whitby's career trajectory includes a postdoctoral position and a LabexMER International Fellowship in France, following initial rejections, highlighting her perseverance. Her research projects continue from her postdoctoral work, now balanced with teaching and academic responsibilities.
