Dr. Hannah McHugh is a Research Fellow at the Ethics Institute within the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, Faculty of Humanities, Utrecht University. She currently serves as a postdoctoral researcher on Professor Ingrid Robeyns' VICI-funded project "Visions of the Future", which analyzes alternative socio-economic models to replace neoliberal capitalism including degrowth, care economy, and democratic socialism.
Her educational background includes:
- PhD in Political Theory, University College London
- Postdoctoral Fellow, Justitia Centre for Advanced Studies, Goethe University Frankfurt am Main
Dr. McHugh's research centers on two core motivations: developing normative foundations for policy reforms targeting contemporary domination structures (unjust markets, social media platforms), and providing practical philosophical guidance for citizens combating injustice in evolving social norms. Her work critically engages with Neo-republican theory, Ethics of markets, Political responsibility, and Feminist political theory, with specific focus on democracy futures, market-corporation dynamics, and ethical dilemmas in oppressive contexts.
Her recent publications reveal a cohesive trajectory examining power structures across financial systems, social recognition mechanisms, and democratic theory. Articles consistently address domination ethics while bridging abstract philosophy with real-world policy applications, particularly in market regulation and citizen responsibility frameworks.
Dr. McHugh actively contributes to academic discourse as Editor of the Political Philosophy blog "What to do about now?". Her scholarly perspective is uniquely informed by seven years in international financial services policy and practical governance experience as an elected Labour Party Councillor in Islington, London, where she applies theoretical insights to municipal decision-making. She has previously taught at the London School of Economics and University College London.
