Dr. Hannah Goozee is a Researcher in the Department of War Studies at the School of Security Studies (Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy). She specializes in the politics of injury, trauma, and transitional justice, particularly in post-apartheid South Africa. Her current work focuses on the ERC/UKRI-funded Mapping Injury project, examining how injury shapes political agency and global responses in the Global South.
Her doctoral research (2021) analyzed trauma narratives in the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission using decolonial and feminist frameworks. Previous roles include teaching International Relations and Conflict Studies at Utrecht University and the University of Groningen.
Her research integrates interdisciplinary approaches from International Relations, Conflict Studies, and Transitional Justice to explore legacies of violence, medicalization of politics, and justice processes. The Mapping Injury project, co-led with Prof. Vivienne Jabri, investigates legal/political mechanisms responding to injury in South Africa through community and organizational case studies.
Key research themes include: decolonizing trauma theory, critical security studies, and the intersections between violence, memory, and governance.
