Dr. Hannah Ewence serves as Head of Humanities, Cultures and Environment at the University of Chester, leading academic provision for Geography, History, Archaeology, and Theology. As a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, she has expertise in student recruitment, curriculum design, and research excellence within Modern History, Jewish Studies, and Minority Studies.
Ewence's research examines nineteenth and twentieth century British-Jewish history, migration patterns, and colonial legacies. Her monograph 'The Alien Jew in the British Imagination' (2019) analyzes representations of Eastern European Jewish migrants. She has directed funded projects including AHRC and Heritage Lottery research on Belgian refugees in Cheshire (1914-1919) and leads the 'Global History in One City' initiative documenting Chester's transnational significance.
Her publications explore themes of displacement, identity formation, and memory cultures. Current collaborations with Chester Cathedral investigate colonial-era heritage. Ewence teaches British imperial history and supervises postgraduate research on immigration, colonialism, and minority experiences.
