Hannah Buxbaum is the Martin Luther King Jr. Professor of Law at the UC Davis School of Law (King Hall), having joined in 2025 from Indiana University Maurer School of Law (1997–2025). She holds leadership roles including U.S. member of the Hague Academy of International Law’s governing council and President of the American Society of Comparative Law (2024–present). Her academic career includes visiting appointments at the London School of Economics, Humboldt University, and UC Berkeley, alongside extensive editorial roles in international law publications.
Education: B.A. (Cornell University), J.D. (Cornell Law School, magna cum laude), and LL.M. (University of Heidelberg, summa cum laude). Her research focuses on international jurisdiction, comparative law, and transnational legal frameworks, with over 50 scholarly articles and major books like Transnational Business Problems and edited volumes on extraterritoriality.
Honors include the Indiana University Bicentennial Medal (2019), multiple teaching awards, and fellowships from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and others. She advises the U.S. State Department on private international law and sits on editorial boards of leading journals including the American Journal of International Law.
Administrative leadership includes Vice President for International Affairs at Indiana University (2018–2025), Interim Dean (2012–2014), and Executive Associate Dean (2009–2012) of Maurer School of Law. Her work bridges academic scholarship with policy impact in global legal systems.
