Hanna Sjögren is an Associate Professor in Educational Science at Malmö University, working within the Faculty of Learning and Society, Department of Childhood, Education and Society. She serves as a Senior Lecturer in pedagogy with a background spanning political science and technology and science studies.
Her research centers on the complex relationship between state, family, and school systems, with particular emphasis on critical perspectives informed by sociological theories. Current investigations focus on how municipal officials and guardians navigate the tension between individual freedom and equal opportunities within school placement and choice systems. She leads the Swedish Research Council-funded project 'Primary School Placement through School Choice: How Municipal Officials Organize for Freedom of Choice and Equal Opportunities' (2024-2027).
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a consistent focus on educational policy, school choice mechanisms, and critical theoretical approaches to understanding educational systems. Her work examines how parents are positioned as both citizens and consumers within educational frameworks, explores the philosophical underpinnings of educational rights, and investigates the value of critical research methodologies in educational science.
Hanna Sjögren holds significant administrative responsibilities, serving as chair of the nominating committee at the Faculty of Learning and Society and as a member of the management team for the Malmö Research Centre for Imagining and Co-Creating Futures (2025-2030). She also serves as editor for Malmö University's journal series 'Critical-Vitalist Studies in Childhood, Education and Society.'
