Hanna Garth is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Princeton University. She holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from UCLA, an MPH from Boston University, and was a UC President’s Postdoctoral Fellow at UC Irvine. Her research focuses on the anthropology of food, exploring how marginalized communities navigate structural inequalities in accessing basic needs, with a regional emphasis on Latin America, the Caribbean, and Black/Latinx communities in the U.S.
Garth’s work examines global industrial food systems’ impacts on inequality, including projects in Cuba, Los Angeles, and South Los Angeles. Her first book, Food in Cuba: The Pursuit of a Decent Meal (2020), analyzes food distribution systems in Santiago de Cuba. She co-edited Black Food Matters: Racial Justice in the Wake of Food Justice (2020) and is currently researching emergency food programming during/after the pandemic and Caribbean seafood systems.
Her research interests span food justice, race, racism, medical anthropology, and social justice activism. She has held academic positions at UC San Diego and UC Irvine, and her publications address topics like food access, racial capitalism, and collaborative praxis in academia.
