Hank Gutman is a Distinguished Adjunct Professor of Law and Senior Fellow for the Innovation Center for Law and Technology at New York Law School. He retired as Partner of Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP, where he led the Intellectual Property Practice Group for over 20 years (1996–retirement).

Research Focus: Professor Gutman specializes in intellectual property law, with expertise in high-stakes litigation, copyright disputes, and patent law. His landmark cases include Lotus v. Borland (argued before the U.S. Supreme Court) and representations for clients like Intel, Apple, and Verizon. He also engages in pro bono digital copyright work for institutions such as the New York Public Library.
Awards: Recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, he chaired its Complex Litigation Committee and co-edits Anatomy of a Patent Case with the Federal Judicial Center.
Civic Leadership: Actively contributes as Chair of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Board Member of Brooklyn Bridge Park (since 1998), Trustee of Brooklyn Public Library (co-chairing Digital Innovation Committee), and Board Member of St. Ann’s Warehouse.
